Accessible Learning Services

Registration

Beginning in Fall 2024, Accessible Learning Services will use the Accommodate platform for all accessibility-related services for students. We will provide training and help sessions over the summer months once the portal for students is available.

Make an accommodation request

Complete the form to submit your accommodation request prior to the start of your first term, or as soon as a barrier is identified. If you're unsure whether you require accommodations, email your questions to accessible.learning@acadiau.ca

Intake Process

  • Step 1: Schedule a Meeting with our Accessibility Resource Facilitator for an intake meeting.

    In this meeting you will discuss:

    • Provincial services and equipment grants
    • Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities (CSG-PD)
    • Note-taking, tutoring, and other academic supports
    • Documentation requirements and renewal
    • Scholarships and opportunities for a reduced course load
    • Potential accommodations, dependent upon your documentation

    Note: We require active and explicit permission from the individual seeking to register with our services. Students are welcome to have a support person present during their intake meeting, but we are unable to hold intake meetings without the student being present.

  • Step 2: Provide documentation (if you haven’t already)
    Based on the recommendations in your documentation, Accessible Learning Services will draft an accommodation letter that is sent at the beginning of each term to your professors.
  • Step 3: Access resources!

    Take a look at our Workshops & Events page, Academic Success Resources, or meet with one of our team to discuss your specific needs and we will provide recommendations for community or university supports. It is important to us to provide evidence-based support and resources to all of our students. While all students may not be eligible for accommodations or identify with having a disability, Acadia has many different programs available to support student success. If you are unsure if our services are for you, please contact us at accessible.learning@acadiau.ca and we can direct you to the appropriate resource.

Confidentiality

It is important to note that registering with our services does not appear on your transcript or school record. All documentation provided to Accessible Learning Services is securely stored separate from the rest of your student records and remains confidential.

In fact, any information that Acadia University collects from you remains confidential, as governed by the NS Freedom and Information and Protection of Privacy Act. This means we will not share your information without your explicit consent unless exceptional circumstances occur, such as:

  • There is a concern for your safety or others;
  • We are legally required to do so (such as a court subpoena);
  • You give your explicit consent for information to be released or shared.
